Everything you need to know about Matcha Green Tea

Matcha is finely ground Japanese green tea leaves. With its origins rooted in Japanese tea ceremonies and spiritual meditation, Matcha's history spans over hundreds of years and across a multitude of cultural practices. Buddhist monks in Japan, for example, would drink Matcha prior to meditation in order to stay calm while mentally alert. Incorporating the aesthetics of Zen Buddhism and Shintoism, Matcha was used in Japanese tea ceremonies, [ also known as Sa-dõ ].

Nowadays, Matcha has become the new superfood due to its high level of ORACs [antioxidant count], catechins, L-theanine, and so much more!. Many, therefore, enjoy drinking Matcha not only for its creamy, earthy, and sweet taste but also for the many health benefits it provides.

A Brief Background on Matcha's Life-Cycle

It all starts in Kyoto, Japan, where the tropical climate is perfect for growing delicious green tea. Shortly before harvesting, the Matcha leaves are shaded completely to reduce the rate of photosynthesis.

Our Matcha is then carefully hand-picked for high-quality young leaves. Soon after the leaves are harvested, they are steamed for about 20 seconds to prevent oxidization, giving it a bright and sweet flavor!

The leaves are then air-dried and separated into leaf and stem, ensuring that only the pure leaf will be consumed. This rids our Matcha of any overwhelming bitter flavor.

The leaves are finally ground into a fine powder using traditional stone mills. The fresh and fine Matcha is packaged right away, allowing the creamy and smoothness of the powder to stay fresh until it reaches you!

Introducing the many reasons why you should be drinking Matcha!

Matcha doesn’t just taste great -- it is great for you! From a lush of anti-aging antioxidants and fat burning catechins, to mood-enhancing L-theanine, matcha seems more like an elixir of health than a cup of green tea. So, how exactly does matcha affect your health, and why should you be drinking it?

First of all, let’s categorize matcha’s positive effects on your health into three different sections:

  1. Cellular Health
  2. Weight Loss
  3. And Mental State of Mind

Cellular health, while a broad category, refers to the rich presence of antioxidants and its prevention of cellular damage, ranging from cancers and immune health, to physical aging. Behind all of these maladies lies a culprit -- free radicals, which negatively interact with and inflict damage to important cellular components.

What are Antioxidants & why are they so important?:

Antioxidants, on the other hand, are our body’s way of neutralizing the oxidative damage caused by free radicals, and further prevents the oxidization of other molecules. A diet high in antioxidant-rich foods can ultimately assist in repairing damaged cells, preventing additional cellular damage, boosting the immune system.

Does Matcha contain Antioxidants?

Matcha doesn’t ONLY contain antioxidants -- it’s practically overflowing with them! In fact, matcha has the highest count of ORAC’s compared to other antioxidant-rich superfoods!

While matcha is not a straightforward ‘diet pill’, it has helped many avid-drinkers shed off the pounds and stay slim for a number of reasons. Notably, matcha is overflowing in EGCG, a fat-burning antioxidant catechin that not only induces lipolysis (the breakdown of fat cells) but also prevents adipogenesis (the formation of fat cells). EGCG is also known to lower cholecystokinin, a hormone that sustains & regulates hunger levels. Overall, matcha's rich presence of this fat-burning compound has been shown to boost drinkers’ metabolism, control hunger levels, and keep off the extra pounds.

Mental State of Mind

L-Theanine is a nifty little compound- discovered in 1949 by Japanese scientists studying green tea leaves, L-theanine has been the subject of scholarly study for decades. L- theanine is an amino acid that crosses the blood-brain barrier, causing the relaxing pharmacological effects that tea drinkers know and love. These effects are not limited to mere relaxation, however; the health benefits of this compound extend to positive effects on anxiety, cognition, mood, and blood pressure. The calm, cool, and collected tea drinker has always known this, but scientific research has pointed out L-theanine as a major reason for this phenomena.

In Matcha, the level of L-theanine is off the charts! Compared to regular green tea, Matcha has up to 5 times more (20mg vs 4mg) L-theanine in every cup. 飲みましょう!
